The Quiet Power of a Good Book

There is something wonderful about disappearing into a good book. For an hour or two you are not thinking about anything except the world on the page. No lists. No worries. No quietly running through tomorrow while pretending to relax. Just a story carrying you along at its own pace.
It does not matter in the slightest what you read. A gripping thriller, an old favourite you have been through four times already, a bit of poetry, a magazine about something you happen to love. The point is not to be clever about it or to be seen reading the right thing.
The point is to give your mind somewhere gentle to rest. A book asks something of you, but it asks the easy sort of attention, the kind that occupies the front of your head and lets the back of it quietly sort itself out. That is a rarer thing than it sounds. Most of what competes for your attention takes and gives nothing back.
So this Wednesday, find a comfy spot, get yourself properly settled rather than perched, and pick something up. Put the phone in another room if you are anything like me.
Treat it as time that is entirely yours, because it is. You have more than earned it, and you did not need to earn it anyway.
