Phone Someone You Miss

There is almost certainly someone you keep meaning to ring. An old friend, a cousin, somebody you got on with brilliantly and then life just got in the way. Nothing happened. There was no falling out. It simply drifted, the way these things do when nobody is watching.

The trouble is that the longer it goes on, the bigger the phone call feels. Six months in it is a nice thought. Two years in it feels like it needs an occasion, or an excuse, or an apology for the gap.

It does not need any of those. So here is the idea for today. Ring them. No reason, no occasion, nothing to report. Just because you thought of them, and you can say exactly that.

The first thirty seconds might be slightly awkward, and then it will not be, because people are almost always delighted to hear from somebody who rang for no reason at all. It is rarer than it should be. It is a small thing that lifts two people at once, which is an unusually good bargain by any measure. Go and find their number.
