Finding Your People

For a long time I felt like the only person in the world going through this. I knew, in a factual sort of way, that I was not. Somebody had probably even told me the statistics. But knowing it and feeling it are entirely different things, and what I felt was that I was on my own with it. That feeling of being completely alone was, honestly, harder to bear than any of the medical side of it. The medical side at least came with a plan.

Everything changed the day I started connecting with other tubies. People who did not need it all explained from the beginning. People who understood the good days and the bad ones because they were living them too, right then, that same week. You could say one sentence and they would already know the other ten. That sense of being understood without having to work for it is worth more than almost anything, and I had badly underestimated how much I was missing it.

It is not that the people around me before did not care. They cared enormously. But there is a particular kind of tiredness in always being the one who has to explain, and the relief when that stops is genuinely physical. You feel it go.

It is a big part of why I want to build a proper community hub, so that no tubie and no family ever has to feel as cut off as I once did. Someone local to turn to. Meetings, day trips, a friendly face who simply gets it and does not need briefing first. It should not come down to luck and the right person happening to find you, which is roughly how it worked for me.

If you are feeling isolated right now, please reach out. Send the message, even the awkward one you have redrafted four times. Come to the thing, even if you leave after twenty minutes. Your people are out there and they are looking for you too. Finding them changes everything.
