Cook Something From Scratch

Cooking gets treated as a chore, mainly because most of the time it genuinely is one. It is on a schedule, people are waiting, it has to be on the table, and it has to be finished whether you are enjoying it or not. That is not cooking. That is catering.

So here is a different proposition. Cook something from scratch when there is no need to at all. No time limit, nothing riding on it, nobody waiting. Something that takes a good while and slowly fills the whole house with a smell.

The good bit is the process, not the plate, and once you accept that everything else about it changes. The chopping, the stirring, the standing over it. The way it gradually turns into a thing that did not exist an hour ago and now does, entirely because of you. It occupies your hands and quietens your head in a way that very little else manages, and it asks nothing clever of you.

And if you are not the one eating it, that genuinely does not spoil it. I promise. Feed somebody else and watch them enjoy it, or feed the freezer and forget about it. The making was the point all along.
