A Stroll With No Purpose

We are so used to everything having a purpose. Even a walk becomes exercise, or steps to count, or a means of getting somewhere we have to be. Somewhere along the line the simple act of going outside acquired a job to do, and started being measured.

So here is a lovely idea for today. Go for a stroll that has no purpose at all.

Do not track it. Do not time it. Do not decide in advance how far you are going, because the moment you do that you have given it a target and it is a task again. Just step outside and let your feet take you wherever they fancy going.

Notice the little things while you are out. A tree you have walked past a hundred times and never actually looked at. The sky, which is different every single day and which almost nobody looks up at. A friendly dog. The particular smell of the air after rain. None of it is important, and that is exactly the point of it.

A slow wander for its own sake is one of the simplest pleasures there is, and it does the mind a world of good precisely because you are not asking it to achieve anything. Give yourself permission to potter along with nowhere in particular to be.
